The Nutcracker, Puppy Love & Modern Housekeeping

Hello all! Here I am, on a Tuesday evening, after cleaning up supper, contemplating how easy we have it as far as modern housekeeping is concerned. I know this sounds really crazy, and it is, but I was thinking how convenient we have it these days with all of our modern appliances like microwaves and convection ovens. I was thinking about my grandma, my dad's mom, thinking how difficult it must have been to feed ten children at a single time. Obviously the older kids helped with the younger kids and such, but I know that meal times must have been chaotic for my grandma. She obviously didn't have a microwave to help zap the potatoes so that they would be ready with the rest of the meal. She didn't have a convection oven to cook her food evenly in the oven. And yet I think back about the food she prepared for us and I remember always looking forward to her homemade applesauce, pot roast with stewed tomatoes and the most perfectly peppered overeasy eggs. I wish she were still here to teach me how to can tomatoes and make that cinnamon-y applesauce. This whole premise makes me realize that we have so much "stuff" - gadgets and things and whatchamacallits - bread makers and food processors and espresso machines. But lately I have really been trying to dwell on simplicity. It seems to be that simple is so much better. It may take a little longer or take a little more effort, but sometimes I think it is the simplicity of things that makes those "things" so great. We really are so spoiled today when it comes to "stuff." I pray that I instill simple living in my girls and show them to appreciate gratefulness for all we are blessed with.

This past Sunday afternoon I took Madison to see the Nutcracker. This is our little mother-daughter Christmas tradition. I have been taking her to see this show since she was 3. It seems that every year she loves more. This time around, when it was done she looked and me and said, "Awwwww.....that went too fast. I don't want it to be over yet!" She seems more intrigued by the costumes and dancers and music. This is one of my favorite traditions! I hope she still wants to go when she's 30! :o)

Yesterday we dropped Lucky (our dog) off to be neutered. Ella was just beside herself. She walked out of the vet's office with her head down and lip pouted out. "I miss him already" she muttered...Poor girl. Lucky did just fine and we went to pick him up this morning from the vet. Ella was just exclaiming her love for the dog all the way there. She said, " I miss him so much." "I love him," "He's the best dog." She loved on him the minute she saw him. Kisses and hugs and all. Later, he was attempting to chase her down and chew her pant leg. I heard her say, "Lucky, I'm losing my patience with you!" Mmmmm......I wonder where she's heard that before? :o)
